The development and production of computer chips have been sliced and diced into 7 model portfolios and their performances are  highlighted in 7 Ai Hardware Stocks Model Portfolios and 4 software applications (generative Ai) are tracked in MunAiMarkets’ Ai Software Stock Model Portfolios.

April was a tumultuous month for Ai stocks and the stock performances of each Portfolio are tracked below:  

The 7 Ai Hardware Stocks Model Portfolios

  • There are 4 steps in the development and production of computer chips and those companies are detailed  in the first 4 model Portfolios;
  • Companies that outsource the fabrication of chips to specialized foundries while designing and selling the chips themselves are detailed in Portfolio #5;
  • Companies that do everything themselves in house to control the entire production process are detailed in Portfolio #6; and
  • Model Portfolio #7 consists of companies involved exclusively in the research and development of quantum computers.
  1. The Pure-Play EDA Software Chip Design Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 7.5% in April 
    • Focus: its constituents are involved exclusively (i.e. pure-play) in the custom design of complex semiconductor chips using sophisticated electronic design automation (EDA) software.
    • Constituents: its 2 constituents are as follows: Synopsys (SNPS) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS).
  2. The Pure-Play Semiconductor Foundries Model Portfolio: UP 0.2% in April 
    • Focus: it consist of factories (called foundries in semiconductor jargon) that concentrate all their efforts in the manufacture of chips based on the designs provided by other semiconductor companies.
    • Constituents: its 4 constituents are as follows: GlobalFoundries (GFS): Tower Semiconductor (TSEM);
    • Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM); and United Microelectronics (UMC).
  3. The Pure-Play Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test Stocks Model Portfolio: DOWN 3.4% in April 
    • Focus: it consists of companies that assemble chips into finished semiconductor components, tests for defects and do the very specialized packaging of the chips for shipping.
    • Constituents: its 2 constituents are as follows: ASE Technology (ASX); and Amkor Technology (AMKR).
  4. The Pure-Play Semiconductor Supplier Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 1.1% in April  
    • Focus: its constituents provide essential equipment for manufacturing chips such as lithography machines, etching, test and packaging equipment, automation and inspection systems and production materials such as chemicals, gases, wafers and packaging.
    • Constituents: its 5 constituents are as follows: KLAC Corp. (KLAC); Lam Research (LRCX);  Applied Materials (AMAT); ASML Holding (ASML); and Entegris (ENTG).
  5. The Pure-Play Fabless Semiconductor Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 1.9% in April 
    • Focus: it consists of companies that outsource the fabrication (or fab) of chips to specialized foundries while designing and selling the chips themselves.
    • Constituents: its 6 constituents are as follows: Qualcomm (QCOM); Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR); Marvell (MRVL); Broadcom (AVGO); Nvidia (NVDA); and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
  6. The Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM) Stocks Model Portfolio: DOWN 5.8% in April 
    • Focus: it consists of 8 companies that do everything themselves, i.e. are not pure-play, to control the entire production process.
    • Constituents: its constituents are as follows: Micron Technology (MU); Infineon Technologies (IFNNY);  NXP Semiconductors (NXPI); Analog Devices (ADI);  Texas Instruments (TXN); Intel Corp. (INTC);  Microchip Technology (MCHP); and STMicroelectronics (STM).
  7. The Pure-Play Quantum Computing Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 6.3% in April 
    • Focus: it consists of companies involved exclusively in the research and development of quantum computers.
    • Constituents: its 4 constituents are as follows: IonQ (IONQ); Rigetti Computing (RGTI); D-Wave Computing (QBTS); and Quantum Computing Inc. (QUBT).

 

On average, the 7 Ai Hardware Model Stock Portfolios were UP 1.1% in April.

  1. The Pure-Play CyberSecurity Software Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 9.7% in April
    • Focus: consists of companies that train their models with data from previous attacks to create autonomous systems that can detect if an attack is ongoing based on certain readings allowing them more time to prepare mitigation and response strategies.
    • Constituents: its 5 constituents are: CrowdStrike (CRWD); Zscaler (ZS); Fortinet (FTNT); Check Point Software Technologies (CHKP); and Palo Alto Networks (PANW).
  2. The Pure-Play Cloud Computing SaaS Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 9.2% in April
    • Focus: consists of companies that provide the storage, processing and managing of data on a network of remote computers hosted on the internet.
    • Constituents: its 7 constituents are: Cloudflare (NET); Atlassian (TEAM); MongoDB (MDB); HubSpot (HUBS); Workday (WDAY); Datadog (DDOG); and ServiceNow (NOW).
  3. The Mega-Cap Ai Stocks Portfolio: UP 1.0% in April
    • Focus: highlights those tech companies with market capitalizations in excess of $1Trillion.
    • Constituents: its 8 non pure-play constituents are: Broadcom (AVGO); Meta Platforms (META);  Amazon (AMZN); Alphabet (GOOGL); Apple (AAPL); Microsoft (MSFT); Tesla (TSLA); and Nvidia (NVDA)
  4. The Pure-Play Ai-focused Drug Discovery Stocks Model Portfolio: UP 20.1% in April
    • Focus: highlights those pure-play clinical stage biotech stocks that are embracing AI to streamline drug discovery and development.
    • Constituents: its 5 constituents are: Absci Corporation  (ABSI); Schrödinger (SDGR); Relay Therapeutics (RLAY); AbCellera Biologics (ABCL); and Recursion Pharmaceuticals (RXRX).

 

On average, the 4 Generative Ai Software Model Stock Portfolios were UP % in April.
