The hundreds of AI-related stocks trading on various North American stock exchanges have been reduced to 31 pure-play semiconductor computer chip AI stocks and grouped into the seven stages of chip production plus 30 other AI-related pure-play stocks involved in a full gamut of generative artificial intelligence technology, which, in turn, have been divided into five portfolios for a total of 12 portfolios which MunAiMarkets tracks as to their performances.

The 12 portfolios are presented below by sector, in descending order, as to their performances week-ending October 18th. We highlight those constituents in each portfolio whose stock prices were UP or DOWN by at least 5% during the week and MTD. To determine why a particular stock advanced or declined so much last week, click on the stock symbol and scroll down to the “News” section.

Pure-play Semiconductor Computer Chip AI Portfolios

  • Pure-Play Quantum Computing Stocks Portfolio: UP 25.6% w/e Oct. 18th; UP 35.0% MTD
    • Focus: involved exclusively in the research and development of quantum computers
    • Constituent Performances:

  • Pure-Play Semiconductor Foundries Portfolio: UP 2.6% w/e Oct. 18th; UP 7.9% MTD
    • Focus: factories (called foundries in semiconductor jargon) that concentrate all their efforts in the manufacturing of chips based on the designs provided by other semiconductor companies

    • Focus: assemble chips into finished semiconductor components, tests for defects and do the very specialized packaging of the chips for shipping assembly

    • Focus: equipment and material suppliers provide essential equipment for manufacturing chips such as lithography machines, etching, test and packaging equipment, automation and inspection systems and production materials such as chemicals, gases, wafers and packaging

On average, the above 7 Portfolios of 31 stocks were DOWN 6.2% w/e October 18th, are DOWN 4.8% MTD and UP 14.6% YTD. In comparison, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) Global X AI & Technology ETF of 35 stocks, and an expense ratio of 0.35%, was DOWN 2.4% w/e Oct. 18th, is DOWN 0.7% MTD and is UP 19.4% (-19.05% net) YTD.

    • Focus: use AI to assist in the research and development of new drugs

      • >5%: None
      • <5%: Mongo DB (MDB): -5.9%

On average, the above 5 Portfolios of 30 stocks were DOWN 1.4% w/e October 18th but are UP 4.5% MTD and UP 12.9% YTD. In comparison, the Global X AI & Technology ETF (AIQ) of 90 stocks, and an expense ratio of 0.68%, was DOWN 0.5% w/e Oct. 18th, is UP 1.5% MTD and is UP 21.1% (+20.4% net) YTD.

Summary: The above 12 Portfolios, excluding dividends, if any, were DOWN 3.9%, on average, w/e October 18th, and are currently DOWN 0.4%, on average, MTD but remain UP 13.8% YTDInterestingly, the SOXX ETF and AIQ ETFs were, on average, DOWN 2.2% w/e October 18th, are DOWN 1.0% MTD and UP 19.7% YTD (+18.7% net) in comparison, so one can conclude that the 12 MunAiMarkets AI portfolios do, indeed, have the Ai sector covered!
